Reading Schemes / Teaching Children to Read at Lever Edge Primary Academy

Reading

Reading is an intrinsic part of life at Lever Edge. Not only is it key to all learning, it has a huge impact on children’s self-esteem and future life chances.

At Lever Edge, we teach children to read with enjoyment, with fluency, accuracy and understanding. We want them to become enthusiastic, independent and reflective readers.

Reading skills are used in every area of our curriculum. The skills needed to read with fluency, accuracy and understanding are taught specifically through:

  • Phonics
  • Comprehension
  • Guided Reading
  • Individual Reading
  • Vocabulary Bags

In addition, good reading habits and strategies are modelled by our teaching staff in all lessons.

EYFS

In nursery, children begin their reading journey with a wide range of exciting stories and rhymes brought to life with puppets and play. They choose a story book each week to take home and share with their family. The children begin to explore sounds in the world around them which is then developed into a focus on sounds in words. In reception, they begin to take ownership of their reading and storytelling.

KS1

In KS1, we use a variety of decodable texts from a range of different reading schemes (e.g. Oxford Reading Tree, Big Cat, Rising Stars etc). These are linked to the Supersonic Phonics scheme of work to ensure they link to each phase. All children continue to choose a picture book each week to take home to share.

In year 2, those children working at Greater Depth may be moved onto the Accelerated Reader (AR).

KS2

In KS2 we use Accelerated Reader to motivate, monitor and manage children’s reading. Children may choose their own book, at an appropriate level for them, from our well stocked libraries. When they have completed the book, they then take an online quiz to test their understanding of what they have read.

This system helps children develop a lifelong love of reading and promotes their independence.
